KOMCA entrusts Sacem with the online rights management of its repertoire in Europe

The Korea Music Copyright Association, known as KOMCA, has entrusted Sacem with a mandate for the pan-European management of its members' online music rights. This mandate marks an important milestone for KOMCA and Sacem as they pursue their international development by establishing a strategic bridge between Europe and Asia.

For more than 10 years, Sacem has proven its expertise in online and multi-territorial management at a global level. Sacem is proud to add this mandate with the South Korean authors' society to mandates with major international publishers (including Universal Music Publishing and Warner Chappell) as well as independent publishers (like Wixen Music Publishing and the British collective IMPEL), along with the Canadian authors' society SOCAN.

As part of this agreement, the KOMCA repertoire will be included in the multi-territorial licenses negotiated by Sacem with digital platforms. KOMCA will benefit from Sacem's technological expertise, including access to URights, the copyright management platform for online music that Sacem developed in partnership with IBM. KOMCA will be able to follow in real time and with total transparency each stage of data processing related to the works in its repertoire and have access to the business intelligence tool for analyses on the online market, collections and distributions.

For several years now, the South Korean musical repertoire has known success beyond Asia, becoming a truly worldwide phenomenon. K-Pop groups such as BTS or Blackpink are behind this reach and influence, and Sacem is delighted to be able to manage the rights of such a dynamic repertoire.

Jean-Noël Tronc, Sacem’s CEO, said: "This new mandate marks an important step for Sacem, which is pursuing its international development by creating an unprecedented bridge to Asia. I am proud that our South Korean counterparts saw  Sacem as the partner of choice to manage their online rights and thank KOMCA's President, Mr. Hong Jin Young, for his confidence. Our digital expertise and the power of the URights solution that we’re providing will enable KOMCA to optimize revenue for all of its members. In these times of crisis, when digital usage continues to grow in spite of everything, it is all the more important to ensure that the works of creators and publishers are well represented on all continents.”

M. Hong Jin Young, chairman of KOMCA, said: “I believe that Sacem is by far the most prominent organization, in the field of art and culture. Such partnership with Sacem will be of great help in increasing stable royalty collection for K-pop in pan-European regions. In particular, Sacem’s long-standing know-how in multi-territorial mandate projects and the advanced technology of URights, have given KOMCA confidence that it will have a significant impact on improving member services and convenience to our employees. This partnership has also established a structural system that can quickly grasp the distribution status of musical works and give a real-time access to KOMCA, which we value significantly. With this mandate, we hope to strengthen cooperation between the two Societies as strategic partners for the protection of Korean works.”
