SACEM and MaMA lead Keychange movement in France
Keychange along with partners SACEM and MAMA Festival & Convention are proud to announce an expansion of the Keychange movement in France.
9 French organisations have signed the Keychange gender pledge, representing a wide panorama of the industry: Centre National de la Musique, De Concert !, E.I.F.E.I.L. (Éditeurs Indépendants Fédérés en France), FÉLIN (Fédération Nationale des Labels et Distributeurs Indépendants), Réseau MAP, AMA (Alliance des Managers d’Artistes), La Petite, DO Éditions and La Bobine. These businesses have signed the Keychange gender equality pledge towards achieving 50% representation of women and under-represented genders.
Christine Lidon, President of SACEM’s Gender Equality Commission, said “The health crisis continues today to drastically impact the music and live performance industry in France and around the world. Music authors, songwriters and publishers are the first to be affected by the shutdown of the music scene, the financial consequences of which rest very heavily on their shoulders. In this context, which weakens and jeopardizes the cultural economy, it is important to continue to mobilize for the survival of the sector, and to continue to reflect on the place of women in the music industry in order to offer current and future generations, whose works will be broadcast and performed on stage at the end of this crisis, a music industry that is still alive, that is also fair and inclusive. As a French partner, Sacem is delighted to support the values of diversity and gender equality carried by the Keychange movement during this week dedicated to France. "
Aziliz Benech from MAMA said, “Keychange's commitment to improving diversity and equality within the industry gives us all a tangible... but achievable goal! Raising the awareness of all professionals is part of the solution for better equality.”
New venue signatory La Bobine (Grenoble) said, "There is a worldwide problem with gender equality, and we want to do better, to be a safe place, a meeting place for all. At La Bobine we are aware of the need to make sure we are fully representative of the society we live in. We also believe that we are stronger together and proactive cooperation in a global network will be decisive.”
New signatory FÉLIN (FÉdération des Labels INdépendants) said, “FÉLIN wants to change the figures in the music industry and believes deeply in more equality and diversity. We would like to see more women in positions of responsibility, more entrepreneurs and, in the long term, more labels for short.”
Professional development & leadership
On Thursday 3rd December at 4:30pm CET, a French-language panel will discuss solutions for the gender imbalance in France, with a focus on the progressive mentor programmes leading the way. According to SACEM’s upcoming report (Harris Interactive Report 2020), only 54% of women in the French music industry believe having as much confidence in themselves as men. This Keychange focus week will reveal the lack of diversity and join together discussions on what needs to be done and how individuals and organisations can join the movement for change.
Emily Gonneau, member of editorial committee of MaMA conference and Founder of Change de Disque, will moderate an online round-table to give more depth to new and existing programmes. She will be joined by Céline Garcia (DO Music, previous MEWEM mentee and Keychange participant 2020/21), Juliette Metz (Encore Merci Editions, CSDEM President and MEWEM mentor), Claire Morel (SheSaidSo France & ‘SheGrows’ mentoring programme), Jean-Baptiste Réblé (Fraca-Ma & Affranchies! Mentoring programme), Stéphanie Gembarski (FEDELIMA & 'Wah' mentoring programme) and Patricia Sarrant (SNEP & ‘All Access’ programme) Join on Thursday 3rd December from 16h30 CET on Facebook Live via Keychange, SACEM, MaMA and Change de Disque.
In the context of the Keychange France week, le Cosy Lab will host a second discussion on Women in Music Tech, in partnership with MaMA and le CNM and associated to SACEM and Keychange. At the crossroads of Tech & Music, two environments known for their gender inequality, few women hold senior management positions in Music Tech. Laurence Le Ny (Orange) and Julie Knibbe (Music Tomorrow) will take part in a discussion to identify barriers to management positions, and levers most likely to rapidly accelerate gender equality in these key positions. Details of the live chat will follow on Le Cosy Lab.
Keychange programme in France
As campaigners for gender equality in music, Keychange invests in emerging talent with a yearly participation programme, whilst continuing to encourage festivals, conferences and a growing range of music organisations and institutions to sign a pledge to include at least 50% women and under-represented genders in their programming, staffing and beyond by 2022. The current list spans 40 countries and over 350 organisations. See the full list here.
In addition to the ongoing Keychange Pledge, 74 participants – a roster made up of emerging artists and innovators within the music industry – are selected each year from across Europe and Canada to take part in international festivals, showcase events, collaborations and a programme of creative labs. Exceptionally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Keychange 2020 participants will see their involvement extended until December 2021, in order to allow for travel and development to take place in the following year, with online mentoring, panels, and workshops run by Capacity Building Lead, Chimes until then. Partners across Europe and Canada will host discussions around the national gender equality climate during 2020.
