Paris, ranked 3rd most musical city in the world by an international study:
Sacem salutes the role and influence of French music
The index of the most musical cities carried out by the German website Momox, ranks Paris 3rd, behind London and New York, but ahead of Los Angeles and Berlin.
Sacem, which works every day to defend the rights of its members, authors, composers and publishers in the French music scene, and to support its clients who distribute music, is delighted with this recognition, which once again shows the central place of music in French society and its ability to influence the whole world.
Indeed, this performance is all the more significant as the ranking takes into account factors as varied as the influence of local, contemporary or heritage artists, the place of music education, the share of the working population working in the cultural sector, or the supply of record stores and the place of cities in international tours. Paris ranks in the top five for all of these criteria.
The study shows:
-the strength of the French and Francophone repertoire, supported by Sacem, which is the second most popular repertoire for export, behind the British-American repertoire. Whether embodied by contemporary artists or belonging to the history of 20th century music, it is rich in the diversity of its aesthetics, from French song to electronic music, from classical to urban;
-the quality and choice of musical education available in major French cities. As part of its cultural action, Sacem works daily to promote artistic and cultural education at all times and in all places;
-the economic weight of the cultural sector in France, which includes more than 250,000 music professionals;
-and the overall attachment of the French to music, as shown by the survey conducted by the Opinion Way institute for Sacem last November, indicating that three-quarters of French people (73%) consider music to be an important part of their lives.
"This result shows once again the worldwide influence of French music as well as the deep bond that connects Parisians and more widely the French to music in all its dimensions. It rewards the strength, vitality and diversity of musical creation in our country, as well as the commitment of the professionals who teach, perform, welcome and release music on a daily basis to make it accessible to everyone. It should be an encouragement to continue defending the French scene, in France and internationally, in a musical universe in full transformation. It should also encourage us to strengthen access to music in French territories that do not currently benefit from the richness and variety of the offer that characterises Paris and the major metropolises.
Sacem is fully mobilised alongside its partners and clients to contribute to these objectives," explains Cécile Rap-Veber, CEO of Sacem.
