When music hits the big screen.
Sacem celebrates composers in Cannes.
What would Star Wars be without John Williams's legendary music? Or The Godfather without Nino Rota's unforgettable score? It's impossible to imagine A Man and a Woman without Francis Lai's melody, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg without Michel Legrand's score, The Artist without Ludovic Bource's notes, The Shape of Water without Alexandre Desplat's soundtrack, or the shower scene in Hitchcock's Psycho without Bernard Herrmann's music.
These iconic pieces of music have left as deep an impression on our memories as the images they accompany. The great moments of cinema are born in this alchemy between sound and image.
As an institutional partner of the Festival, Sacem has planned an ambitious programme to promote the role of composers in film. Throughout the fortnight, Sacem will accompany members whose works feature in the films presented and will orchestrate several occasions to showcase their work.
Supporting musical creation, from the studio to the Croisette
Through iconic events such as The Music Lesson with Alexandre Desplat and Guillermo del Toro; Sunset Live Sacem, Spot the Composer, and the composers' lunch, Sacem invites professionals from the world of cinema to meet these creators, discover their careers, their worlds and their artistic processes.
Another signature moment at Cannes this year: a red carpet ceremony dedicated to the composers of the films presented at Cannes.
Beyond these highlights, Sacem affirms its support for all the selections at Cannes — from the Official Selection to the Directors' Fortnight, Critics' Week, ACID and Talents Cannes Adami — by standing alongside its composer-members whose works are in the spotlight this year.
A key player in financing original music for cinema, Sacem supports the writing and production of music for short and feature films, documentaries and animated films.
This year, Sacem is proud to have supported 11 films selected for the Cannes Film Festival.
“Composers play a central role in filmmaking. Their music brings images to life and enriches the narrative in a unique way. Through our presence in Cannes, and throughout the year thanks to our cultural action programmes, we work to raise composers’ profiles and promote opportunities for collaboration. These initiatives also help reveal new talents and support their development in an environment that is as demanding as it is exciting.” Patrick Sigwalt, composer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sacem.
Among the composers present this year: Adrien Marcellin, Alex Beaupain, Alexandre Desplat, Alexei Aigui, Amine Bouhafa, Arnaud Toulon, Audrey Ismael, Bachar Mar Khalife, Cedryck Santens, Chapelier fou, Chilly Gonzales, Cinna Peyghamy, Clemence Ducreux, Clément Animalsons, Clovis Schneider, Damien Bonnel, Daniel Kowalski, Dany Synthé, Delphine Malaussena, Emile Sornin, Emilien Levistre, Emma Prat, Florencia Di Concilio, Frederic Le Louet, Germain Izydoczyk, Para One, Jeremy Bocquet, Keren Ann, Léo Couture, Manuel Merlot, Maxence Dussere, Mila Levistre, Nicolas Becker, Nicolas Blies, Olaf Hund, Olivier Arson, Olivier Defays, Olivier Marguerit, Pablo Pico, Pascal Bantz, Pr2b, Yuksek, Pierre III, Pierre Oberkampf, Quentin Sirjacq, Rémi Boubal, ROB, Samuel Marot Saferis, Séverin Favriau, Shai Maestro, Théo Kaiser, Thomas Krameyer, Tony Gatlif, Delphine Mantoulet, Arthur H, Valentin Hadjadj, Vincent Blanchard, Eddie Ruscha, Charles Humenry.
