Burida and Sacem announce partnership to manage online royalties for works in the Ivorian repertoire

Wednesday, May 30, 2024 — Agreements / Partnerships, Press releases

With this new mandate, Sacem (Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique - Society of authors, composers and publishers of music) will manage the online royalties for works in the Burida (Bureau ivoirien du droit d'auteur - Ivorian Copyright Bureau) repertoire used by international platforms.

Burida's repertoire will be included in the multi-territory licences negotiated by Sacem with digital platforms and will benefit from the digital copyright management tools developed by Sacem. Burida will thus be able to monitor, in real time, data relating to the use of works in its repertoire, market analyses, collections and distributions carried out on its behalf by Sacem. All these benefits, combined with the unrivalled pricing conditions introduced by Sacem, will enable Burida members to receive fair remuneration for any digital use of their works.

Online use has become a major source of revenue for authors' societies and the members they represent. Sacem's expertise, its technological tools and the agreements it has signed with the various digital players will enable it to optimise the collection and accelerate the distribution of royalties linked to the use of works in Burida's repertoire, as it does for all its members and all the partners who have entrusted it with the management of their online rights. (These include collective management societies such as KOMCA in South Korea, SOCAN in Canada, ASCAP in the United States, UBC in Brazil, IPRS in India and international publishers such as Universal Music Publishing, IMPEL, etc.).

This partnership marks a new stage for Burida and demonstrates its desire to take full advantage of its repertoire's digital potential to improve remuneration for its members and offer them new services. Sacem will stand by Burida as it continues its work to modernise copyright in Ivory Coast.

Cécile Rap-Veber, CEO of Sacem:
"The Ivory Coast has a unique musical heritage that echoes throughout the world, thanks in particular to Alpha Blondy, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Didi B, Josey, VDA, Suspect 95 and Tam Sir. I am proud that our Ivorian counterparts have found Sacem to be the partner of choice to manage their online royalties, and I would like to thank the Director General of Burida, Mr. Karim Ouattara. For more than 10 years, Sacem has established itself as one of the best rights-management societies in the world, thanks to its technological expertise and its ability to negotiate multi-territorial online licences. This mandate comes on top of the 92 others signed with international publishers and other collective management organisations. At a time when digital technology represents a growing source of revenue for many creators, the confidence shown in us by Burida demonstrates our ability to work together in the interests of authors, composers and music publishers."

 Karim Ouattara, CEO of  Burida:
"Burida has close, historic ties with Sacem, and we would like to express our immense gratitude for their generosity. By helping us collect music royalties from digital platforms, Sacem offers our members a valuable opportunity to make a living from their art. For us, this collaboration represents a source of hope and renewal. Not only will our artists receive fair remuneration for their work, but they will also be able to look forward to a brighter and more prosperous future in the artistic world. We are deeply grateful for this and hope that this partnership will grow stronger over the years for the benefit of us all."
